The end of 2011 and the beginning or 2012 have been pretty big in the android sphere. AT&T – Denied The best news for those of us that are using T-mobile was the non sale to ATT. During my time on ATT there always seemed to be a billing error. I know that not everyone has the same bad experience I had with them but I do not wish to return. ATT was also the last company to roll out android phones, the last to let you download apps from Amazon, and during my time there they would never unlock my phone so that I could change out my sim card when I was traveling to escape the high cost of calling when overseas. Things may have changed; I have many people I know in my area who get terrible coverage out here in the southwest though. That is still the same.

Elsewhere, there is still the sale of Motorola to Google. This was approved by the boards of both companies. WE have yet to hear what the US Justice department feels about the sale though, like the sale of T-mobile to ATT they could feel that it leaves the market with too little competition and weigh in against the sale. It looks like the whole point of Google making the purchase is to get the patents that are owned by Motorola. This would give them access to more than 17,000 patents that they may well need in the ever present legal battles with Apple.

Apple Topples – Samsung Rules

Another big news item to end 2011, Apple was no longer the best selling phone for the massive holiday sales season. The honors for the number one selling phone this Christmas season went to Samsung with the Galaxy S II. What does this mean for Apple? They fell from grace once before, will it happen again.

Closed IOS versus (mostly) Open Android

The closed platform of IOS keeps users safe, gives them a consistent user experience across all of their devices and their apps, but it also limits how useful the device can be. Apple has taken the most powerful mobile device ever created and effectively hobbled it. This has given android device makers a chance to challenge the Apple dominance. Androids abilities will soon far outpace those of IOS. Already Android has far more useful apps created as opposed to IOS. The most popular IOS downloads are games, and the phone itself is controlled by a jukebox application on from the computer. Nothing wrong with that but it does limit the things that developers can do for the Apple. It was hoped by many developers that the SDK released by apple would address some of those concerns but it was unfortunately sorely lacking in allowing increased functionality. So Apple will begin to languish just as the Android platform begins to really pick up steam.

The Future?

I feel that 2012 will be the year that Android truly dominates in the phone market. The release of ICS 4.0 brings the OS now on par with IOS. As they release software upgrades in smaller more incremental steps, new functions are added more quickly and the real holdup is often waiting for the carriers and the manufacturers to push out the software upgrades to the customers’ devices.

If you are a super heavy data user and you live in an area that is well served by them, you might wish to consider Sprint Mobile. At the moment they are the only major carrier that is serving up an unlimited Data plan for mobile service.

If you are looking for an Android device Sprint carries a pretty good selection, and was pretty quick to adopt the platform soon after T-Mobile. This gives them some time experience in working with Android devices.

Plans prices are pretty fair and if you use a lot of data on your phone, you may not find a better deal anyplace.

In my opinion this merger is going to be really bad for the phone industry in the US as whole. I see a time in the near future when prices start to rise pretty rapidly since there is less competition. You will also get less innovation. T-Mobile was willing to take chances. They were to first company in the US that was willing to offer the Android phone system. ATT might never have offered an android phone were it not for the fact that they were going to lose the exclusive on the Iphone.

ATT is also priced much higher than T mobile. Typical price plans are around 20% higher than what you have been paying if you make the switch to ATT. They also tend to throttle your data much sooner. So that also is a difference in price if you are a heavy data user you will need to upgrade your plan to get a similar amount of data.

While everyone out there is finally beginning to have nicer phones, Tmobile as the smallest company seems inclined to experiment far more than anyone else in trying out new equipment for the benefit of the customers. Other carriers are now beginning to catch up, Verizon was quick to put out a tablet version of the android.

In the long run this is going to be bad for the US phone industry. You need a healthy amount of competition. In the past 10 or so years there have been an incredible number of mergers within the US phone industry. Much of that has been for the better, some has not. It is helpful that you can now send a text across country as they have been able to do within Europe for many years.
I hope that ATT is as good as their word, but past experience has taught that large corps rarely follow the words they started and are ready to screw over the loyal customers at moment’s notice.

Sometimes I think computers are quickly becoming a relic of the past. More and more people are turning to their smart phones for their various computing needs. And who can blame them? It sure is more convenient to be able to carry your computer around with you in your pocket. Another quality of smart phones that is highly sought after is their touchscreens. Many are of the opinion that such touchscreens are significantly more natural to use and can reduce finger strain. With so many android touchscreen phones on the market however, the consumer is hard-pressed parse between all the options. Here I will review a few android touchscreen phones to give you an idea of what is available and what you should be looking for.

T-Mobile’s MyTouch has been hailed as something of a standard within the industry. Its sales have reflected opinion. Recently, T-Mobile launched the newest version: MyTouch 3G. After getting a chance to test it out, I must admit that the MyTouch 3G raises the bar on android touch screen phones. The MyTouch comes with a reasonably sized 3.5” HGVA touchscreen. Now before you go looking for the biggest touchscreen, remember that you have to set it in your pocket from time to time. At the same time however you may be utilizing your smart phone on a very regular basis and if this screen is too small, you may experience eyestrain. In this sense, it is just as easy to find a screen that is too big as it is to find a screen that is too small. Personally, I found the MyTouch to be of a reasonable size to carry around, but at the same time I experienced no discomfort in using the phone on a regular basis. The MyTouch comes load with a 3.2 megapixel camera and capture is very high quality video. I found customizing the MyTouch to be both easy and useful. If you owned this phone but have not tailored it to your own needs, then you may be missing out on a large portion of its functionality. Overall, the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G lives up to the MyTouch legacy. If you are looking for a android touch screen phone that will be able to perform in any situation, then check out the T-mobile MyTouch.

The T-Mobile Pulse is an android touch screen phone for those us who need a phone that performs. Similarly to the MyTouch, the Pulse include a 3.5” touchscreen and a 3.2 megapixel camera. I found the pulses touchscreen to be easier to use than the MyTouch’s touch screen despite the fact that they share manufacturers. Specifically, I found the MyTouch’s touch screen to be ever so slightly laggy at times. This was not a big draw-back, but compared with the lightning fast response time of the Pulse, it was certainly noticeable. Response time is a quality very pertinent to android touchscreen phones, because if the phone is to laggy will lose much of its function (who wants to be screwing around with their touchscreen all day?).

In conclusion, T-Mobile MyTouch 3G impulse are both excellent android touch screen phones. However I found the touchscreen on the Pulse to be slightly superior. So, if responsiveness is a big issue for you, the choice should be clear.

Although the HTC Hero is an amazing HTC android phone the HTC Evo 4G certainly gives it a run for its money. When you catch drift of what is hidden beneath the Evo 4G’s sleek cover, you will get an idea why. Evo 4G boasts a 1 GHz snapdragon processor that is able to run android 2.2 at a blazing speed. Furthermore, the Evo 4G comes loaded with a eight megapixel camera that has the ability to record 720p HD video! Talk about muscle! Like the hero, the Evo 4G comes with HTC’s Sense user interface. A major selling point of HTC’s products has been their customizability using the Sense interface. If you are the kind of guy that needs the fastest phone, the most high-risk camera, and the best apps, then that HTC Evo 4G should fit the bill nicely.

A HTC android phone to give both the Hero and that Evo 4G a run for their money is the HTC Sensation. The Sensation was designed as a multimedia-specialized smart phone. To accommodate such a purpose, the Sensation is designed with a touchscreen almost 4.5 inches large! This makes movie watching or picture viewing all thing the easier and enjoyable. The Sensation comes loaded with a 1.2 dual – core processor to match such a formidable screen. If you are looking for a phone to keep you entertained, then look no further than the Sensation!

HTC android phones, you really can’t go wrong. However the most important part of buying a smart phone is matching a smart phones capabilities to your needs. If you just need a smart phone and don’t want to do much thinking, then the HTC hero might be up your alley. If you have more extensive needs for your smart phone, then perhaps the Evo 4G would be a better choice. If you think you’ll largely be flipping through pictures and watching funny movies then the HTC Sensation should fit your needs perfectly.
