Android is somewhat of a newcomer to the mobile phone operating system market, so one might question why android is the best option. Android’s biggest advantage is that its development is open source. What I mean by that is that anyone can take a look at the source code for android apps and anyone can modify said source code. The implication of this is that you have an entire community of people developing and improving the operating system instead of restricting access and input to a small group of professional designers. This means that apps work better, are better tailored to actual real world needs, and that any flaws are quickly updated. It’s pretty easy to see why people like open source development so much!

If you’ve been reading closely, you should know by now that Google android is a mobile phone operating system that has a wide variety of uses and uses open source development. Basically if you want your smart phone to do damn near anything and wanted to work on a regular basis (unlike professionally/closed source developed apps and O.S.’s) then Google android is probably the operating system for you!

It seems like a whirl wind, how fast and what a furry these smartphones have hit consumers. Once the first two phones hit the market, OH BOY, it was raining Droids! Which was fantastic because they were so cool and fascinating ( ha! one of the Google phones) we couldn’t get enough. It was a whole new world introduced to us- a phone that had touch screen, ran multiple programs… Apps, wtf? The Apps phenomena really is what sparked all the fun. Cell phone technology has taken off, it has blasted off is more like it, blown UP. Smartphones and the ongoing love hate relationship between Google and Apple seem to really feed off of one another and create lots of new programs. Of course the obvious difference between the two which is what sets them apart is the open system (Google) and the closed system (Apple). Yet with all  these new advances there are some questions arising. The biggest is security! More and more apps are now able to gain access to vital information such as passwords, bank info, etc.

Quite a few experts have been analyzing such issues. The question that was sparked was which platform is safer? Let’s begin with the different types of phones:

• Blackberry aka “Crackberry” – Limits users from installing, sharing or creating different applications. But Blackberry became popular because it was the first phone that allowed you to get your email on your phone, definitely not because it is a Smartphone.
• Windows Mobile- Microsoft created a mini computer in a phone. It is has the ability for users to install and share applications, but people really haven’t been into purchasing it.
• iPhone- Really started the launch of Smartphones and all the hoopla. Although Apple controls what applications get approval and which do not. There are a TON of apps. Due to the closed syste

Or born into a country like North Korea where you can’t think and you are told what is and isn’t okay. Makes you wonder what’s beyond the Apple walls!

• Android aka “Droid”- the OS was designed to resemble a PC and be able to run many different applications  all at once which aren’t to be monitored, per se, by a central entity. This is all great but this does make the system vulnerable.

Recent study that was conducted ran these numbers: there will be forty eight thousand apps available to Android users, about twenty percent of the apps will require a third party or access from some other entity. There are some hackers that perhaps develop apps to do hateful things like bank fraud, identity theft, and so much more.

About five percent of apps have the capability to place a call to any number without user’s permission. Two percent of apps have that capability to send SMS messages (text messages) without user’s permission. The percentages seem small but in ratio with the overall number, the likeliness of bad luck, and the lack of filtering one should be aware at least.

Just be aware, take caution of the sites you visit, and easy with the downloading! Do a little research and check out comments and such.

For all you bicycle lovers this is your app! I was so excited when I came across this. I had no idea that it existed-where some real die hard bicyclist may have already known about this.

Google bike maps, Google bicycle maps & Google bike routes are all up but there is one new addition, bicycle map directions on Google Maps. This was created to help those that do a lot of cycling to plan out their route.

More and more towns are now beginning to build paths and routes all over cities. For many locals that came be confusing but also for those traveling through or just wanting to cycle  while doing some traveling that can be very challenging.

Some critics do mention that it is still important to keep your print out maps with you if you do not have the mobile version. If one does have a Smartphone travelers can carry along the map and refer as they continue on.

Another issue with the app is that cyclist may get confused as to which turn to take. There some faults to it but by far it really is a cool app and great idea by Google. They have also done walking and transit maps. Blackberry got the transit map back in September 2008 along with Windows Mobile later on that year. Walking directions for Blackberry, iPhone and Droid Smartphones are all available now too.

The latest unofficial news out about Google is that they are working on a market for those that are in business-to better bring together the business world and the Droid. A specific Google Store with apps directly marketed to those that are in business. It would save time so that one would not have to go through the Android Market.  Apps for things like word processing, security and information. Now that the Motorola Droid and the HTC Nexus One have been noticed by the consumer. People can now see that these phones would be good alternative to the iPhone.
