Cell phone technology has taken off, it has blasted off is more like it, blown UP. Smartphones and the ongoing love hate relationship between Google and Apple seem to really feed off of one another and create lots of new programs. Of course the obvious difference between the two which is what sets them apart is the open system (Google) and the closed system (Apple). Yet with all these new advances there are some questions arising. The biggest is security! More and more apps are now able to gain access to vital information such as passwords, bank info, etc.

Quite a few experts have been analyzing such issues. The question that was sparked was which platform is safer? Let’s begin with the different types of phones:

Blackberry aka “Crackberry” – Limits users from installing, sharing or creating different applications. But Blackberry became popular because it was the first phone that allowed you to get your email on your phone, definitely not because it is a Smartphone.

Windows Mobile- Microsoft created a mini computer in a phone. It is has the ability for users to install and share applications, but people really haven’t been into purchasing it.

iPhone- Really started the launch of Smartphones and all the hoopla. Although Apple controls what applications get approval and which do not. There are a TON of apps. Due to the closed syste

m the security is pretty damn good. When you think about it though, if you have never been outside the castle walls- how are you to know what the world is like? Or born into a country like North Korea where you can’t think and you are told what is and isn’t okay. Makes you wonder what’s beyond the Apple walls!

Android aka “Droid”- the OS was designed to resemble a PC and be able to run many different applications all at once which aren’t to be monitored, per se, by a central entity. This is all great but this does make the system vulnerable.

Recent study that was conducted ran these numbers: there will be forty eight thousand apps available to Android users, about twenty percent of the apps will require a third party or access from some other entity. There are some hackers that perhaps develop apps to do hateful things like bank fraud, identity theft, and so much more.

About five percent of apps have the capability to place a call to any number without user’s permission. Two percent of apps have that capability to send SMS messages (text messages) without user’s permission. The percentages seem small but in ratio with the overall number, the likeliness of bad luck, and the lack of filtering one should be aware at least.

Just be aware, take caution of the sites you visit, and easy with the downloading! Do a little research and check out comments and such.

Google has been giving an extra incentive with the phone carriers who agree to carry Android devices. They are giving phone carriers a piece of the pie, filling the glass up, they are giving them …. drum roll please.. revenue shares of advertising. May seem kinda… “wth hell” but really that’s some sweet cash. Of course the phone companies are not willing to comment on it but according to moconews.net this new practice has begun.
This all came about when people were asking questions as to why Google has grown so fast. The rate in which this company has expanded and really the number of handsets they have sold just within the past year-estimations run to about 22 million handsets. That’s HUGE!!

Google has set the bar. They have been innovative and resourceful. They will continue to-they have to, Apple just may beat out Microsoft this year. That would leave just Google to compete. Markets do so much better when there is competition.

How do wireless carriers and the internet work together? Now with the Android Smart Phone’s on the market the way we surf the internet has changed. More people surf the net on their phones more than on their desktops. With so many more people able to access from just about anywhere has brought much attention from web browsers.

AT&T is the last wireless carrier to get in on the Droid action. They are to come out with the Motorola Backflip which will be running the Android operating system. Yet AT&T has decided to go along with Yahoo as their default search engine. This is a big advancement for Yahoo in that they now will gain more traffic. More people will mean more money and other added perks.

T-Mobile has teamed up with Google for their default search engine on some of their phones. Google has not always been the chosen one in that a few years back Yahoo was able to pull one over Google and get on with T-Mobile. T-Mobile does have an exclusive contract with Yahoo so depending on the stipulations T-Mobile may have to assign Yahoo as the default browser.

Verizon Wireless uses Bing as their default web browser. (Who knew there were so many different web browsers available?) Bing is the Microsoft’s contender to web browsing. They have exclusive rights for Verizon’s mobile phones-managing the searches and advertisements for the mobile phones. Blackberry has the Bing but the HTC Droid Eris and the Motorola Droid run on Google. It will be interesting once Microsoft launches their new phone with Windows 7. This may cause an even bigger rift.

Google’s free software platform has really given the boost it has needed in order to compete with the iPhone. The iPhone took the market like a tornado! Now Google’s Android has begun to fill in those gaps that iPhone left.
Android has really brought up all the big game players. Many like Motorola who were struggling to keep their heads above water have helped carry the Android. Motorola has become the preferred platform versus the Sony Ericsson.
Some argue that the Droid has brought down barriers to the fierce competition such as the PC industry. Makers such as Hewlett-Packard and Acer who are loyal to Microsoft some of the toughest competition around are all on the lookout.
It is estimated that thirty percent of all smart phone models launched this year will have the Droid operating system. Which has dramatically increased with the nine percent from last year which is a strong indicator as to what the future holds for the new alien software.
A recent report put out by top analyst mentioned that Droid market has changed the rules of the game now; regarding cell phones it is no longer about hardware and everything to do with software which has diverted the value of things.
Android based phones have opened up the market for other industries such as chip makers which has really brought down the costs of these particular cell phones. Making them more obtainable for everyone from every social status level but which has also given great opportunity to many of the cell phone carriers.
With so many different players in the game and with so many types of industries, it has brought the competition which also has brought diversity. More people want a piece of the pie and are willing to jump in. In the end bringing the challenge and making better products for the consumer.
